Tonight is the winter f’ormal for my sorority. My boyfriend is here visiting from UNC for the weekend. It’s really fun to have an excuse to dress up and everyone is always in a great mood tonight and the pst couple formals have been some of my favorite nights at school. Also, we got our “littles” yesterday so now we have a complete sorority family and it will be fun to take pictures together. My little is from new york and really sweet. WE went to dinner last night and got to know each other a little bit and it was great!

I’m at UVM right now in the library while my friend is in an exam so I’m doing some homework while I have a chance. My flight was at 7am this morning from Madison so I had to wake up at 545 and landed here at 12. She took to me to get sandwiches from a place called “Feel Good” which is a group that she is very active in on campus where they make all different kinds of grilled cheese sandwiches and all of the money goes to ending world hunger. I had a Cheesus sandwich, which was cheese and honey mustard and cinnamon sugar on sourdough bread. Her sandwich was delicious too and they go to a great cuase!

Vermont

I’m going to visit my best friend in Vermont next weekend. She is a sophomore at UVM and we have been best friends since preschool when we were two. We are the same age, but she took a year off to travel in Europe so she is technically a year behind me in school. I’m excited to visit because she has a lot of fun things planned – like visiting a goat cheese farm, and a list of great restaurants to go to. Hopefully the weather will be nice; I visited UVM when I was visiting colleges and it was 25 below zero and windier than it is here so I’m hoping for better weather this time. I’m also really excited to meet all of her friends that I’ve heard a lot about from her. It will be a nice break to get to see her before Thanksgiving because our families are spending the holidays in different places.

Vacation

I’m going to New York City tomorrow afternoon to visit my camp friends and my cousins. My dad is also coming friday night with my sister to take us out to dinner and my mom is coming saturday for the day to visit. I’m really excited to see everyone becuase I havent seen them since this summer. Also, my cousins are huge yankees fans and my camp friends are big phillies fans so it will be a lot of fun to watch the world series with them. I checked the weather forecast earlier today too and it’s supposed to be around 65 degrees which should be great. I’m really looking forwward to it!

Second life and the environmental world

I went to a speaker a couple weeks ago here on campus – Paul Ehrlic – who among many other things mentioned that many environmental leaders have created second life characters where they meet weekly to discuss environmental issues. They use second life because the time and cost of transportation is too high and by logging in they can meet in a virtual space where they can discuss everything they would if they were to meet in person. I think this is really interesting because its an example of an application of technological advances in the real world. They also welcome everyday people to create characters and join them!

Study Abroad

I’m studying abroad in Madrid next semester and I’m really excited. My program is from February 3 to May 28th. My boyfriend is studying abroad in London and his program starts the 10 of January so I’m going to go live with him for a couple weeks in London which should be really exciting. Then I will fly to Madrid on the 3rd to start my program. I’ve been doing all of the logistical things today for my trip which is really annoying (like trying to get a student visa, buying plane tickets and picking housing.) I’m really excited for live abroad and I just want it to be January already!

I’m really happy today becuase I’m in southbeach visiting my daddy and its 86 degrees! It’s so nice to be out of the cold weather in Madison. Also, I havent seen him in 2 months so it’s nice to have some stress free time to spend with him. We’re going to a brazilian barbecue place for dinner tonight where they give you a disk that is red on one side and green on the other and they walk around with 10-15 different kinds of meat and when your disk is facing with the green side up they bring you meat and when you have the red side up they stop. I have been vegan for the past 13 months and I’ve just recently started eating meat so I’m really excited!

Michael Pollan

I think it’s really exciting that Michael Pollan is on campus this weekend because I am a big fan, but I also think it’s really important that his message get spread about the way we eat and what we eat. We spend the smallest percentage of our income on food per year than any other country in the world, we also spend the least amount of time cooking and eating with our family and friends. I don’t remember the specifics but there was a study done about I believe France that found that we eat less calories then them but are more overweight because scientists believe we put too much stress on food. Rather than eating whole, minimally processed foods, we eat things that contain between 10 and 30 ingredients regularly that if left on a shelf would survive years! Michael Pollan lovingly refers to these items as “food-like substances” and I think this is really important because Americans need to start putting more effort into what we eat and how we eat it.

Locked Up Abroad

I’m watching Locked Up Abroad right now about a group of backpackers who smuggled around 1.6 million dollars of gold into Nepal from Hong Kong. They were struggling to come up with money and a Nepalese gangster approached them about smuggling the gold to Nepal where it was much more expensive and offered them 2000 dollars each. They took the offer and each carried about 56 pounds of gold on the plane. After they arrived at the airport they were met by an older man who brought them to the bathroom where he had laid the vests filled with gold on the bathroom stalls. The men made it to Nepal without getting caught but after they got off the plane they were stopped by a woman searching bags. Each man ended up spending four years in a Nepalese jail and each spoke about the horrors of the time they spent there and lamented about the choices they had made.

In my environmental class this week we were assigned to read all of the “spotlight” boxes in our text book (the spotlight boxes were just little tidbits about environmental issues around the world) and it was really saddening to see how the way we have neglected and mistreated our earth has effected so many aspects of life. For example, one spotlight highlighted the issues of using pesticides while another talked about the issues of air pollution, and still another about the issues of garbage dumps. Additionally, we were assigned to read the eleven guest essays from professors, activists, and teachers around the country who explained the environmental issue they cared most about. From just these little excerpts of the book it was really depressing to continuously read about all the problems but not hear about any solutions.
